A few weeks ago after I heard a little of Charles Spencer’s book about the physical and sexual, not to mention emotional, abuse he suffered after having been sent to a boarding school at eight, as a result of which there has been a debate about the damage sending mainly upper class children away from home to such institutions can and does cause. My views )

All that was in the background as I read Mary Todd’s Last Term by Frances Greenwood, the first boarding school story I’ve read in a while. Read more... )

The Head Girl at Wynford: Winifred Darch, Oxford, 1935.

This book is a cut above the girls own stories I’ve been reading recently and haven’t posted about (they’ve been at about the level of ‘Shirley at Charterton’ so I wasn’t very motivated to post about them) if not top flight. It starts on the last day of term, Read more... )

Of the three, I preferred the latter.

There was another book that I read over my Easter holidays that I want to review, but it deserves a post of its own.

The Head Girl of St Bee’s: Alys Chatwyn, The Epworth Press

If Chatwyn had been happy to stick with ‘St Bee’s College’ – a school characterised as a hive, and its girls ‘bees’ ‘drones’ etc – that would be one thing. But Read more... )

I've slightly updated my icons at Dreamwidth and Livejournal.

The next book I intend to (re)read is 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society' in preparation for watching the film adaptation, coming out next month, I believe. I didn't know about the film until I saw the trailer.

I got hold of a Chambers hardback copy of this book (a reprint) - I wasn't struck by anything additional that wasn't in the paperback edition, but I haven't compared page by page or anything. (ETA: My Armada paperback is a 'revised edition' which was first published in 1970. Still couldn't tell you how revised it is, though.)

In this book, Read more... )

Daisy Pulls it Off
Written by: Denise Deegan

Well played, Denise Deegan!

Last night, I went to see Daisy Pulls it Off, which I have been itching to see since I first heard of it - a play that gently sends up and celebrates girls' boarding school stories. At the start of the year, I saw that this production was on and rushed to buy a ticket. As the date approached, I began to wonder how they'd handle the material, I only knew a rough outline of the story, but I started worrying that the production would poke fun in the wrong way, but it didn't and now I really want a copy of the play. Oh, and I'm really rather chuffed.

Dimsie Goes to School: Dorita Fairlie Bruce. Oxford Univerity Press. Reprinted, 1949.

This is the first of three Dimsie books that I have to read...

And so, we begin at the beginning. I read my first Dimsie book after reading a couple of Springdale books, and my impression of the Jane Willard Foundation school was that it was always raining in comprison, and that they were always doing drills (which sounded beastly) and what kind of a name is the 'Jane Willard Foundation', wondered I. Ouf, typing it out, that opinion comes on a bit stronger than I expected. But rereading and reading more Dimsie books toned it down, and I'm glad to have the opportunity to get a fuller picture of Dimsie and 'Jane's.'. Another thing is that I was used to Dimsie as a Senior, so having her be in the Hilary Garth role is strange.
