TENNIS: Wimbledon day five
Jun. 25th, 2011 08:42 amI saw the end of the first set of Nadal vs. Mueller – which I will rejoin on resumption, if I can. Mueller was clearly playing very, very well, but Nadal stayed with him and somehow won the set. And this is why he's 'one of the greats' and frustrating to play. The Beeb were showing Nadal’s fall over and over, but hadn’t he talked to the umpire (and quite possible asked for the trainer) before then? The rain delay came at an useful time for him, although Nadal? On Court no. 1? I wonder if Federer will be put on there this year – if only to mollify Serena.
A less happy moment for a rain delay for Hantchukova – 30-all on your serve. Azarenka came back the better player. I was aggrieved that they went on and on about Roddick losing, but took their time to tell us that Zvonareva had lost. Yes, Roddick’s been a finalist more times and is better known, but we weren’t really counting him as a serious contender, were we? Not to the Fantastic Four, surely. And his and Hewitt's demise is well-covered ground. The women’s game is far more open, Zvonareva was a finalist last year and the number 2 seed (and I would have been less surprised to see her in the final than Wozniacki, even if she wasn’t my tip to win). Azarenka may have hopes, but if the Williamses tighten up their game, they may yet make it, not to mention Sharapova (good scoreline for Robson and a very impressive one from Baltacha – having not watched the matches, I don’t know if they blew chances, though.) But Wozniacki may be able to differentiate herself from Safina and Jankovic and win. Any woman left in the draw shouldn't give up hope!
Murray under the roof on prime-time television, again! I was irked with him (probably not as irked as he was with himself) for the loose game at the start of the second set, and although it was good to see him run away with the third, he did make things more difficult for himself than he needed to. Which gets exhausting.
I am going to try to catch Djokovic playing today (on TV, obviously).
