TENNIS: Wimbledon (early days)
Jun. 22nd, 2011 08:05 amAndy Murray looks leaner than he did at Queen's. Is it the change of colour in his t-shirts? The facial hair or has he lost weight? I only saw a few minutes of Venus Williams in play, but I did gawp at her outfit. It mustn't hamper her play, although with all that material flapping about, you'd think it would.
I came home last night to do a bit of gawping about something else. Isner was playing Mahut and I wasn't sure if it was 'again' or a replay of the epicest match there ever was for a bit. Can you imagine the faces of whoever did the draw and the players when it went up? It looked as if Mahut was going to get the third set (Isner having won the first two) when Today at Wimbledon started. (I still think they could air that at nine, when play is nearly finished, or half eight, even. Eight is too early.)
Lots of talk about the Big Four in the men's game - I honestly wouldn't like to put them in order. Federer played well throughout the French, but Nadal went up gears, so who knows? I hadn't realised how much of a wobble Falla had caused Federer last year, probably because I hadn't seen the match. There was talk about who you'd put in the second tier - Soderling, Roddick, Del Potro. I feel duty bound to mention Berdych after last year, but more confident in naming Tsonga after his serving display at Queen's.
As for the women, well, it could be anyone, including Serena Williams (although Stosur and Jankovic should be disappointed at being out so soon.)
Isner won in three, by the way, taking much less time and energy than last year.
