Women’s
One was a contrast in styles and experience, one was a foregone conclusion.
I thought Muguruza was going to blast Radwanska off the court in two at the beigninning of the second set, but apparently not. However, she was determined to be aggressive in the third set and fortune helped her. She comes across as very likeable and I hope that this is the start of something for a future champion. (Plus, come on, as if Radwanska had a hope of beating Williams. I will be surprised if Muguruza manages it, but she has a better chance with her game, which has to be prefixed by the adjective ‘big’.)
Because, come on, anyone who’s been paying attention knew that Sharapova didn’t have a hope of beating Williams either. It was billed by Barker as a great match because they're the biggest names in women's tennis, but the results made it clear there would be only one winner. At some point, age may catch up with Serena, but this is not that point. Indeed, after the first couple of games I was wondering if Williams would bagel Sharapova. She didn’t, but she won easily enough. Maybe Maria will never, can never, change her game, but Nadal and Djokovic and Murray and Federer have to match their competitors.
Men's
Once Gasquet had settled down, it seemed like he was going to give Djokovic more of a match than I'd expected, certainly he showed some of the tennis that had got him to this position, although he really needed to find a way to win the tiebreak at the end of the first set. Anyway, Djokovic found a way to his best and won. I did see some stunning points!
I watched the first set and a half of Murray vs Federer avidly, hoping Murray would find a way and expecting, well, anything, but Federer really was excellent. And I presume he maintained that excellence. (Fine, Djokovic, you can beat him if you like.)
I saw snatches of doubles matches too. No pressure on the elder Murray brother...
