By the time I could settle down for the tennis, Federer was ahead by two sets. As someone who doesn’t join in the ‘oohing’ and ‘ahhing’ when he plays, even though I acknowledge how spectacular his shots are, I was quite irritated with him for losing the third set and extending the match. I wanted to see Kvitova and Murray!

By the time Kvitova had started to play, so had Ward and I switched between both matches. At one point, both the players I was supporting were ahead, and with Ward 2 sets to 1 up, I started to believe he’d make the fourth (surely he’s done enough to be picked for the Davis cup tie the commentators never mention, though). Kvitova was playing amazingly and had a break in the second, but Jankovic was starting to play well and waited for Kvitova to implode. Which she sort of did, while Ward’s opponent started playing better. Bah.

It was quite comforting, for me, then to watch Murray thrash a dispirited Seppi for two sets, even if the trio of commentators - because this was being aired on BBC One - were bored enough to discuss cricket, golf and wedding rings. Then Seppi's time-out happened, Murray lost all focus, and I was quite glad to be called away for the middle of that set. I came back to watch and Murray couldn’t quite force his way back into the third, then I left (so I missed Murray calling the trainer too) and came back to see him thrashing Seppi again in the fourth. At his best, Murray was up there with Federer and Djokovic (and Wawrinka in as much as I know; despite winning the French, he hasn’t had much coverage on the Beeb). My ladies dream final is not to be...

On Monday, I had an explanation for why I was mildly fuddled about the tennis last week. They have added a week’s break between the French Open and Wimbledon, which makes a good deal of sense. Also, Queen’s has been given more importance in terms of points (and prize money), so there was a lot of bragging about the line-up.
