TENNIS: Wimbledon 2015 fourth round
Jul. 7th, 2015 09:10 amFederer, Wawrinka, Murray and, to point, Djokovic have been playing well, although I think that in facing big servers, Murray and Djokovic had a bigger test in this round. Anderson’s first two sets (or tiebreakers) were so impressive, but then Djokovic found a way of imposing himself – surely too, Anderson was starting to realise his lead on the world no. 1 and that affected his play. So, it’ll be decided by a ‘one-set shootout’ and if Anderson can find his serving rhythm and back it up like he did yesterday, it could be close, or Djokovic could thrash him and restore order to the men’s game.
What did bug me was that they put Djokovic, reigning Wimbledon champion and undisputed world no. 1 on Court No. 1, but Federer got Centre Court. When did he last win Wimbledon again? And I didn’t see them moving Serena off Court No. 1. Plus, as with the Murray vs Karlovic match, it was always likely there’d be tie-breaks making for a longer match.
The women’s results apparently led to entirely different quarter finalists to last year – as if that is a surprise. Some big names, some in-form names and one or two complete surprises. I would hope that Azarenka pushes Serena a bit, because I think that if she gets her form back, she can beat her, although perhaps a little further down the line than now.
I did watch Wimbledon 2Day – retooled with no audience or viewing public interaction, or basically returned to the old format with the traditional fluidity in the schedule. One or two of Balding’s questions were clearly from a person who knows little about tennis, but MacEnroe and Austin were good and I liked how they followed the antics of Kyrigos (one word: brat) with Federer to cleanse the palate. However, why will no-one retool Phil Jones’s round-ups, where they decide on a theme and never mind if it doesn’t fit all that’s happening and becomes clunky?
