TENNIS: Queen’s first round
Jun. 17th, 2015 08:29 amOn Monday, I had an explanation for why I was mildly fuddled about the tennis last week. They have added a week’s break between the French Open and Wimbledon, which makes a good deal of sense. Also, Queen’s has been given more importance in terms of points (and prize money), so there was a lot of bragging about the line-up.
I saw some of Raonic and Ward’s match, although it lost interest when Raonic broke Ward in the second set. Ward’s snazzy outfit must be noted and the fact that Raonic looks like an Enid Blyton character all grown up. I then saw the start of Dimitrov vs. Querrey, which was amusing because John Inverdale was called upon to commentate.
Day two – and the defending champion (Dimitrov) won, Nadal went out in something of a shock given that he’d just won at Stuttgart, although Dolgopalov was proof of the depth of the field and Nadal is clearly not what he was, although the point that he's higher in the race, based on this year's results, than his ranking is worth bearing in mind. Murray won by sticking with it and forcing the last return game.
I was irked that television coverage ended at 8 o’clock. It's not Wimbledon, but there's no need for the Beeb's coverage to be this amateurish.
