TENNIS: Wimbledon - middle Saturday
Jun. 30th, 2013 08:36 amI gorged myself on Wimbledon yesterday. Some matches were on in the background, and some I dipped in and out of like Lisicki and Stosur, but I was impressed by Lisicki. She buckled down after dropping her serve and was irresistible, although Stosur sometimes showed her quality.
The most enjoyable match was Gasquet versus Tomic was really, really entertaining, with some gorgeous shot-making. It was pretty close for a while as Gasquet found a way to put aside his befuddlement so often (and his backhand!)
In both those cases, the result belied the seeding. Again.
But there was no danger of that with the two world number ones. Djokovic absolutely outclassed the world no. 25. He seemed to be plaing well within himself, but was so good that you just had to make high pitched noises of disbelief. It was hard to get involved in the match like normal, though. Would anyone like to play him in that form? I hope Tomic and Del Potro take the edge off him before he plays Murray!
And then we had the bonus of Serena under the roof (has she played under it before?) facing Date-Krumm’s old school play, which did make it a little awkward in the rallies, but only a little awkward. I thought she'd throw up a new challenge for Serena, but, one feels, like with every other opponent in women's tennis at the moment, it's not going to trouble Serena for long.
Apparently Robson won through to the second week - you might have missed it, the Beeb barely mentioned it.
Sarcasm aside, it was a good recovery, but going down 6-1 in the first set doesn't sound terribly brillina. She lost in the doubles, which is probably a good thing, as, technically, her next match is winnable, so she could/should continue this run. It's going to be very interesting to see who capitalises on the gaps left by the male and female seeds in this Wimbledon.
Although I will feel bereft when Wimbledon is over - I generally do - I am glad that we have a day's rest from it after all that. I've reached the point where I'm recognising umpires from how they call points.
