TENNIS: Wimbledon - first week (Thur-Fri)
Jun. 29th, 2013 08:48 amDay four – closer to normal. By the time I came back home, the rain was driving players off the courts, Henman was being dismissive of Gasquet’s mental fortitude and the remaining play was all under the roof. So I watched most of Djokovic’s match. His opponent, Reynolds, did himself proud, which is all you could ask, with an excellent record on the break points. You did sense that we’d be watching the match in a totally different mood had Federer and Nadal not lost. Very early on, I thought that Djokovic would wear Reynolds down, and if he didn’t get to do it in the first set, he certainly took the tie-break by the scruff of its neck, and the last two sets played out as they should for him.
Still, a few more seeds were knocked out, making it seem like a strong possibility that there’ll be a few new names around in week 2. Doesn’t matter on the women's side, because everyone still sees Serena as the likely champ.
Day five – much closer to normal. Again, the weather affected play. I came home to see Janewicz(?) blowing Almagro off the court (I’m sure I have heard of him as a potential up and comer.) If he continues that level, he will do well at Wimbledon.
Other seeds and seed-slayers were eliminated. But a few young guns like Janecwiz and Robson showed promise of breaking through.
Meanwhile Murray demolished Robredo in the first set (give or take one dodgy service game), but Robredo stepped it up enough to make it more competitive in the second and third. However, Murray was controlled – and brilliant at times.
