Good to hear the phrase 'for the rest of the fortnight' and that ITV seems to have most of the same commentating team from last year, more or less, with added Judy Murray. John Inverdale was guilty of one of my pet peeves by referring to a match as a game – a game means something really specific and different in tennis.

I can’t say I watched every point, and I think by the end of the day, they were over-praising the Li Na match, which was more competitive than the score-line suggested, but partly because the former champion wasn’t clinical at the end.

I was excited to see Nadal play – it’s been so long. And Brandis pushed him – I’m convinced the player one had to (!) describe as the tall German watched the Rosol-Nadal match at Wimbledon for inspiration. What I liked about him was that he didn’t back off. I didn’t like that there were times when Nadal looked like he didn’t quite know what to do, but anyway, he somehow stuck in there, played a better tie-break. (And come on, for all the excitement about a possible upset, who doesn’t want to see Nadal face Djokovic in the semis when it comes down to it?)

That was enthralling enough that I wasn’t tempted by Robson-Wozniacki, which Robson should have been more competitive in.

I’d gasped when they’d shown Berdych’s tough, tough draw. And Montfils was the
first hurdle. I started watching at the start of the third set and then dipped in and out. When it came to the fifth set, I thought that Berdych would just have to wait Montfils out, because he would be stronger and fitter, but the Frenchman got inspired.

Er, sorry for all the tennis epithets and clichés that I picked up!
