TENNIS: French Open preview
May. 25th, 2013 03:33 pmI am delighted to see that ITV is going to be showing The French Open on the main channel at times, and not just shunting it over to ITV4. I hope that Andy Murray’s retirement due to injury won’t make them change their minds (I thought he made the right call. Clay is gruelling and playing on it if he’s not fully fit just before the grass, where he’s frankly got a better chance, didn’t seem wise to me.)
And so...
It’s between the top 3 men. I found out this morning that Nadal and Djokovic are seeded to meet in the semis, so it depends on how much stuffing the winner pounds out of the other. From the scraps I’ve picked up about the clay season so far, Nadal has been doing well in terms of results, even if he’s had to scrap for wins. Djokovic will be hungry after last year and Federer would dearly love to beat Nadal to be champion. Other names that have flashed up in the season: Gulbis and Berdych, and I’d never write off Del Potro, Ferrer and the other Spaniards or Tsonga and the Frenchmen who demand you describe them as talented.
Tennis epithets, stock phrases and clichés , how I’ve missed you.
As for the women, well, it all depends on how Serena does, doesn’t it!? She’s the pre-eminent player, she hasn’t had a great history at the French by her standards, she knows that the end of her career is coming sooner rather than later. But it's going to be about the journey, not the destination for the next two weeks.
