US OPEN: And so it begins
Aug. 28th, 2007 08:31 amI came home last night to catch Federer serve for match point - he seemed to have been well in control from the score. Jankovic, or 'the souped-up Martina Hingis' was more consistent, getting the ball back, whereas her opponent was aiming for winners and missing a goodly number of her thumpers. There was talk about 'The Elusive Grandslam' (it almost sounds like the title of a mystery story), and given that she won on her seventh match point, you can see why.
The women's game seems more open than the duopoly (until other young guns step up) of Federer and Nadal. Sure, Henin is excellent, but she is probably the smallest of the top players. The williams are unpredictable, there are Serbians and Russians... This is in no way a prediction, because I haven't been following the season anything like as closely as I could have, so I don't know who is in form etc. Anyway, thanks to Eurosport, I'll be coming home to tennis again this week. Marvellous.
My next post will probably be a review of 'Lorna on the Land' by Doris Pocock.
(Typo of the day: Grandslap for Grandslam.)
