TENNIS: Aussie Open women's final

feather_ghyllNot long at all now before the men's final! I was almost glad I couldn’t watch the Murray-Federer semi – following the results was tense enough, and then reading up about the match, it sounded unappealing.
I did watch the women’s final, which was quite something. I wouldn’t say it was sublime tennis, but it was certainly compelling, with so few holds of serve, someone being 40-love up meaning nothing, the crowd’s disdain for Azarenka, Li’s two injuries, a pause for FIREWORKS. When she was at her best, Li was too good for Azarenka, but when she was bad, she was very bad, and after she settled, Azarenka showed her match-playing ability and fighting skills. I didn’t see the women’s semis, and I don’t know what happened. I’m maybe more inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt about the time-out than the partisan crowd was, but I like both players. I also like both players to win their first service game. Azarenka couldn’t for ages. Neither player seemed to be able to take the match by the scruff of its neck, probably because of all the bizarre events – I didn’t want to call it until the very end.
Most annoyingly, the sound (I was watching on the BBC’s website) cut off for me from Azarenka’s speech, which no diplomat would envy having to make, although the applause at her win wasn’t the fiasco I was expecting.
