TENNIS: Olympics
Aug. 5th, 2012 08:44 pmOver this weekend, I've seen bits of some matches, had some matches on in the background and had to look up the men's singles results.
Friday: I came home and saw that Del Potro was ahead, sat down and saw Federer claw his way back and some of the incredible third set. I had to leave the house to travel, but heard that Federer had won eventually, which I was sure would help the winner of the other men's semi-finals. To my delight I got to see most of that match and its conculsion. I was really pleased to see how strong Murray was - a very heartening performance, and exciting that he was assured a silver or gold.
Saturday: We had the women's gold medal match on in the background, and at one point I thought Williams was going to double bagel Sharapova, which I was not expecting at all. I thought Sharapova could face up to her more, but Williams was dominant.
I did get to watch most of Robson and Murray against the Germans, but mainly the second set, where they lost their breaks of serve. Murray was a rock, but I was so glad to see Robson pull it together by the end and win a few points to get them through.
Today's results: I am utterly delighted for Murray. I wish I could have seen it. To win so decidedly (the scoreline suggests) is impressive. Yes, Federer's epic match would have taken it out of him, Murray had a point to prove and was playing so well in the doubles, but for him to actually do it at Wimbledon like this is great. I was also impressed by Del Potro recovering to win the bronze.
And for anyone disappointed at the British doubles silver, well, come on. The Belarussians are a class pairing who've played together for much longer. If you'd offered the Brits a silver at the start of the tournament, they'd have taken it, I'm sure. And I hope Robson only learns from the experience and runs with it. Ditto Murray and winning more big matches!
There has been other Olympic stuff on that I have indeed watched, but I'll spare you my thoughts :)
