TENNIS French Open - Women's semis
Jun. 8th, 2012 07:44 amWomen’s semi-finals
I wanted/expected Stosur to win, although everyone said the conditions would favour Errani. At least Stosur’s winning of the US Open was mentioned by the ITV team. The metch was remarkably up and down (I, er, dozed off in the middle of the second set when Stosur imposed herself and woke up to be surprised by the scoreline). It was as much about Stosur losing it as Errani winning it in the third set, because if she'd been able to keep putting the pressure on at the start, she's surely have overpowered her. But the Italian’s retrieving and confidence were impressive. And court-craft. I think everyone has to love court-craft beating power.
In the second match, I wanted Kvitova to win – perhaps it’s a little to do with personalities, but when there were glimpses of her hitting the ball as sweetly as she had at Wimbledon, I felt so cheered. But Sharapova was more together and consistent. I felt it was close (despite the score) until Kvitova’s wrath at the line call didn’t help her. Too many misses, while Sharapova focused on what she wanted to do and did it.
She will be the heavy favourite, non? For all the flaws and the weaknesses, her mind is going to be stronger and even if Errani plays the cannier game, Sharapova has too many weapons (I mean, even if Sharapova's serve goes off, her returns will eat up Errani's serves). Having said all that, this is the women's game...
I was all tennised out and so skipped the mixed doubles final. If we'd seen some doubles play, I might care a little more.
I hope to watch the semis today. I'm confident that Nadal will beat Ferrer and think Djokovic vs. Federer will be more competitive. There'll certainly be more edge to it, given last year. If Federer wins, I think Nadal on this form will win the championship more easily than if Djokovic is his opponent. Djokovic vs. Nadal is the one everyone wants, and unless if Federer has finally found something he's always lacked against Nadal on clay, that match-up will be a disappointment (more than it would be on any other surface). Ferrer vs. anyone in the final would be a shocker.
