TENNIS: French Open - second round
May. 31st, 2012 08:24 pmI came home yesterday to find out that Sam Smith was commentating for ITV's French Open coverage, which I was pleased about, and that Tsonga was playing. I can't get excited about Tsonga in the French, I'd rate Ferrer and Berdych at least higher than him. Anyway, rain stopped play.
I came home today to something completely different! Paul-Henri Matthieu was about to win the third set, then Isner turned it on and won the fourth set quite early on. I was backing Matthieu by this point, mainly because Isner had power and weapons, but Matthieu seemed to have shot-making. As the fifth set marched on at a fine edge, memories of Isner vs. Mahut came to mind, more and more seriously as we passed the 5-4 mark. The quality of the actual tennis mostly dropped, and it started becoming all about stamina and stubborness, but it was great drama and reminded me of why I hold tennis players in such high esteem. I mean, I'm sure whoever Matthieu (bravo!) is playing next will be very grateful for the marathon, but it was great to watch.
