Weighing in without having seen a shot! (But I've followed the results, best I can). As a fan, I'm happier with the women's results than the men's. Nadal losing six of six finals to Djokovic will hurt, although there's no question who is the predominant male player of this year. What an outstanding year it's been for Djokovic. How much has the balance shifted! Although these top four men meeting each other in the semi finals has become predictable, almost (funny that, whatever the rankings, the same duos seem to be drawn against each other), but things have really shifted at the top. I would have loved to see those matches, although I don't know if I'd enjoyed it as a Rafa fan.

But THE WOMEN. That's four different grand slam champions, none of them the world number one, three winning a slam four the first time. I thought Serena would do it again as nearly all the other seeds fell and it sounded as if Stosur had had a gruelling run of matches. Having said that, I like Stosur and expected her to win the French Open last year, until wily Schiavone played a gem of a tactical match, maximising her strengths and nullifying Stosur's. So, I'm really glad Stosur won. I didn't see Serena's bad behaviour - will it really have ramifications for her? She can't pull temper tantrums and shouldn't be allowed to disrespect officials (if that's a fair description of what she did), but...she's Serena Williams. Also, considering that she's come back from very serious ill health this year, she's surely going to be the top challenge for all the grand slam champions of 2011 next year, especially with the Olympics coming up. Meanwhile, poor Wozniacki. She may have the rankings, but other women have the trophies.

Arrgh and poor Andy Murray too, and poor Nadal. Will they or Federer find the way to come up to Djokovic's level? Will it be someone else (Del Potro)? The season isn't over, but the biggest tournament left is the end-of-year one, where there's an element of being the last one standing.

Oh, but back to the tournament I didn't see, will there be ramifications of putting (top) players out in dangerous situations affect this tournament? I cannot believe that they don't have anything to cover the court when this tournament has been battered by the tail-end of hurricanes for quite a few years now. And that's an 'at least'. Obviously, they should be looking at the overall schedule - an old refrain - but this tournament seems to have particular issues. And it's an irony too far for me that part of the reason is craven sucking up to TV channels when it doesn't air on freeview in the UK!

We were all very excited by Sam's win - first Aussie woman to win a Grand Slam since Evonne Goolagong-Cawley in 1980. The US Open was on pay-TV here too, but they put the women's final on free-to-air once Stosur was in it.

And Sam's parents watched her from their home in Queensland. No angsty courtside parents for her - a refreshing change from the norm.

Oh, of course! Well, that's brilliant. She and Sally Pearson will have to tussle it out for Aussie sportswoman of the year.

I like what I've seen of Stosur's demeanour, and obviously the story of her comeback. But she seems like a grown woman with a good attitude towards the sport and her game has been threatening to go all the way in a slam for a while.
