TENNIS: Today's play
May. 31st, 2011 09:26 pmI was surprised to turn on the telly at 1.30 ish and to see Murray and Troicki playing. It was a maddening experience, with Murray not being aggressive enough, even though you knew it was well within his ability to be. And then at 5-2 down, he turned it on. If his ankle is not bothering him, he should beat Chela, but he really needs his head to be in the game to beat Soderling or a Nadal who has beaten Soderling. I'm still minded to believe that it will be Soderling in the final, although I haven't seen him play, but he seems to have been going through with ease. Nadal and Murray could and should beat him, of course, but they may not.
Schiavone and her young Russian opponent (how handy sporting epithets are when you can't be bothered to check up long Russian names) provided a less stressful match, and then I got to see Federer. He wasn't playing brilliantly, but he was playing well enough to beat Monfils - he sort of leaned on him to get the first set and Monfils didn't compete consistently enough until the third set. Federer and Djokovic ought to be a fabulous match up. Will the rest days break Djokovic's rhythm or is the habit of winning (and the quality of play that has led to it) too strong?
I've got to see loads of tennis over the past few days and all the male players that I wanted to see. And what I love about the French Open is that I know the grass season is yet to come.
