TENNIS: The French Open so far
May. 27th, 2011 08:41 pmI've just finished watching the Djokovic vs. Del Potro match. The hitting was amazing. I hope the standard is as high for the resumption tomorrow.
People have been asking me what I'm doing over the bank holiday weekend. There's a list of things that I should do, but I suspect that what I will do will mainly involve sitting down and watching the tennis on the Red Button, because what I wanted to do was watch Djokovic, Nadal, Federer and Murray (to follow the official rankings). One down, three to go!
So far this week, I've kept an eye on the results online and come home to catch at least an hour of tennis, mainly women. Clijsters not quite finishing her first match as well as she should have (a taste of the collapse to come? Hardly.) British players lose - although Heather Watson's result is no disgrace, Andrew Castle's conviction that she could win against Kaneppi had more to do with her nationality than the scores. I've seen some Schiavonne and then Azarenka, being mightily impressive. That and the results put her up there, surely. Zvonareva is the highest ranked player left, Schiavonne and Kusnetsova have won in the past, Sharapova is a former grand slam champion who needs to prove herself after the last result. But given what's already happened, I daresay the women's finalists will be completely different names!
A word on the BBC commentators: Andrew Castle providing a mix of breakfast TV explains it all/motivational speaker spiel, John Lloyd not remembering anything at all and Sam Smith being the best of them, delivering the stats diligently and providing more colour than the other two. She's my favourite, if you didn't realise.
