TENNIS: My tennis weekend
Jan. 25th, 2011 07:15 amThis would be much more timely if I'd managed to post it last night (my time)! Saturday morning was a comparative feast of tennis. I watched the Stosur-Kitsova match, or to be more exact, I watched the competitive first set, rooting for Stosur, because she has a subtler game, even though Kitsova is a lefty. But Kitsova won the tiebreak, and then showed such hitting ability that I thought tabloid headline thoughts about changing her name to Hitova and went off and did other things with the tennis on in the background. The end of the Nadal-Tomic match demanded more attention. For one thing, it was the first opportunity that I’d had to see Nadal play in the Aussie Open. Tomic is certainly a prospect, but Nadal is world no. 1 for a reason, although the news that he sweated so much that he lost a couple of kilos is alarming.
I presume the Beeb didn’t have the rights to the Kusnetsova-Schiavone epic, which was a shame as they’re both interesting players. However, such a match will play into Wozniacki’s hands, presumably. That and Williams’ withdrawal makes it look likely that it’ll be her against Clisters (although I’d love to see Zvonareva do well). And this is where I wish I'd posted this last night. I have no idea what the overnight results are!
On Sunday, I saw a bit of Sharapova losing the plot and the match and then saw Roddick-Wawrinka on the repeat. Wawrinka’s backhand is awesome, but Federer will probably have the measure of him. Then on Monday morning, I saw the end of Murray’s dismantiling of Meltzer on repeat, which with Soderling knocked out is good news.
I would like to see a chunk of a Federer match in this Australian Open, because I haven’t seen him play, and Zvonareva if her ex model hitting partner/coach is still around. But that all depends on the schedules. And of course, with fewer matches (although hopefully of a higher quality) there is less opportunity to see them live. I remember the year when I had Europsport and some insomnia, and I did manage to see quite a lot of the Australian Open. I don't want to see the tennis so much that I want the insomnia back.
Oh, and I can't be the only one who does a double take whenever I hear about the 'Chalet Girl' film, can I?
