Saturday was a successful book shopping day in that I got the one book I was missing in a series I've been reading, a Phyllis Whitney for 50p AND a non Chalet School EMBD. The shopkeeper directed me to two Chalet School hardbacks with dust jackets, but I own them already, okay, in paperback, but I'd spent a lot of money on other things that day, and had popped into the book shop on a whim.

And then I watched tennis.

Radwanska with her careful preciseness for a bit, then I did things around the house while the VIPs were introduced, and then there was that crushing first set from Williams. at least it looked more like what a third round match should look like in the second set, but depending on today's results (her match against Sharapova and how the triumphant Belgian triumphs) I expect her to be in the final, at least.

And then Nadal! The German (Philipp seems to be a popular name for them) played very well, but it was his tiredness and Nadal's stamina that led to the win. And it was a weird match with the trainer and the warning for coaching, which from where I was sitting seemed to be a weird time to give it, and Nadal losing his temper (some of the hitting after that was fearsome). Strange match and as with the wobbles of Federer, it will give the other players hope.

Murray played excellently. I was so pleased that he was 'hot' from the first game (maybe the All England club could schedule for him to play late from now on?) and Simon (a Gallic Joaquim Pheonix lookalike) didn't have the weaponry to do anything to him. He put in some great efforts - and it was entertaining tennis - just to win points in the third. Very good performance, but apparently Soderling has not dropped a set, which is always a barometer of form and leaves more in the tank. So, on Saturday evening, I was left thinking that maybe Soderling should be the favourite (it's been Nadal, Federer, Roddick, Murray maybe Djokovic or Someone Else a la Tsonga or Soderling for most of the week in my head). Granted, Nadal, Federer, Murray and even Roddick know their way better around a grass court, and, I think, the net, which is crucial, but if he serves well and keeps it together... For although Murray was top class on Saturday, he hasn't had a good run since the Aussie Open, and now that England lost the Sporting Eyes of 'the nation' and its expectation will be upon him in a way it wasn't last week. Oh well, Querrey had a five setter.
