TENNIS: US Open 2025 week 1
Aug. 31st, 2025 03:19 pmThis is via news reports, highlights, extended highlights and Quick Served.
Round 1: It wasn’t exactly a surprise after the past year or so that Medvedev (no 13 seed, former champion) was out in the first round, losing to Bonzi, as he had at Wimbledon, although there was this whole drama (not a riot as some headlines would have it) after a photographer wandered on court in between serves at MATCH POINT, the umpire gave a first set because the server (Bonzi) had been disrupted, Medvedev had a meltdown, the crowd sided with him because they wanted a longer match (and most of them don’t know the rules?) and, unnerved, Bonzi lost the point. Instead of winning in three, he won in five. Medvedev had one of his more epic racquet smashes after losing.
Other notable first round matches: apparently, Eala beating Tauson, Krejikova beating Mboko, Bublik beating Cilic, and a nervous, error-strewn Keys losing.
Round 2 was mostly the players you’d expect getting through, some easier than others. Jack Draper pulled out because of his arm injury, Ruud, Mensik and Khachenov lost, Swiatek nearly did, and Gauff won, but was still having troubles with her serve.
Round 3 had Raducanu facing Rybakina and being soundly beaten by her ball-striking. She’s still mostly finding the top seeds too much. Norrie got one set off Djokovic and probably pushed him to find another gear/ bettermatch fitness. Meanwhile, maybe inspired by playing at home or geed up by Ostapenko's bad temper at losing to her, Townsend beat Andreeva in the biggest upset yet. Tiafoe’s run of good runs at the US Open ended, and Shelton who has been so impressive of late withdrew due to injury.
On the first Saturday, the higher ranked players got through, although Sinner dropped a set and Swiatek was down 1-5 in the first set, with some more injury withdrawls. Gauff looked better. And then Auger-Aliasseme beat Zverev, which was unexpected even if Zverev was third seed in name only, and another big upset.
ETA: I deleted the accidental double post about The Thursday Murder Club.
