Before it is entirely too late... In Miami, a lot of (male) seeds crashed out, including Draper, but Raducanu was on something of a run, beating top 10 player Navarro, but was stopped by ill health and Pegula. Filipina teenager Alexandra Eala was on an even better run, having beaten three grand slam champions, the last of which was no. 2 seed Swiatek in the QFs. In the semis, she couldn’t quite get past Pegula in a three-setter, but Andreeva is no longer the only teenage female player everyone’s talking about. Sabalenka had too much for Paolini in the other semi.
Djokovic won Dimitrov quite handily to get through to his bazilionth Masters final, while Mensik and Fritz battled it out in three sets, and the inexperienced but talented Czech won. It seemed as if the conditions were a bit of a factor in the women’s finals, but Sabalenka had too much (power and variety) for Pegula. In the men’s finals, Djokovic had issues with his footing, while Mensik (only 19!!) was able to win in two tiebreaks. It feels as if the future is now, with a clutch of young men who’d been playing in the next gen tournament breaking through, and an increasing number of male players believing they could win when they enter a tournament. Also, Djokovic is still short of winning 100 titles.
On to the clay!
