I followed Indian Wells via highlights and news reports, where Van Der Zanschulp proved he’s always good for an upset, beating Djokovic, Jack Draper cut through Americans and Alcaraz (looking for a triple win here) looked good. Swiatek, also the defending champion, looked equally good. But Andreeva was backing up her first Masters win, beating Rybakina (again), Svitolina and then halting Swiatek at the semis. At the same stage, Sabalenka revenged herself on Keys for the Aussie Open (her opponent only got to win the one game), and the world no. 1 had the lead in the final, but 17 year old Andreeva continues to come into her own and found a way to win. We’ve known she was a prospect, but it seems to be coming good (she’s starting to earn comparisons with legends for what she’s doing.) Meanwhile Medvedev rather handed a way to the finals to Rune in their semi, while Draper and Alcaraz had a very topsy turvy match, but it was the ‘left-handed’ Brit who came through, and proceded to overmatch Rune soon after in the final, winning 2, 2. So in less than a year he’s won a 250 event, a 500 even, made it to a Grand Slam semi and has now won a 1000. Great result.
