SPORTS: The 2020 Olympics in 2021 so far
Jul. 31st, 2021 11:21 amIt took me until the Monday to begin to get into the Olympics, due to the time difference, the range of sports and the BBC’s coverage being biased towards GB competitors, some of whom were more likely to medal, than others, and while they seem to have tended towards picking former sportspeople to commentate, which ought to lead to more informed commentary, but sometimes devolved into screaming.
But the artistic gymnastics were on around my lunchtime so I saw varying amounts of the teams (men and women) and individual all-round competitions. Biles’s withdrawal led to a very open and close competition for an unexpected gold.
I started watching the nightly round-up (Alex Scott seems to have the same problem with the letter ‘g’ as my laptop’s keyboard.) Skateboarding looks more terrifying than women’s hockey, I’m sure some parents of impressionable children are horrified by it and BMX racing/injury acquiring. Unfortunately, the programme seemed to have borrowed some of the Today at Wimbledon features, but sprinkled Japanses at them. The best of these is the videos of young children trying to copy what they’ve seen on the TV.
They kept me updated on the headlines of the tennis (how did Liam Broady end up representing GB? He did amazingly well, thouh.) However, lat night, they showed Zverev apologising for coming back and stopping Djokovic from getting a Goden Slam, but then failed tosay who Zverev would be playing in the match to decide gold and silver. On the women’s side they seemed to be listing the latest Big Name who’d gt beaten, so no change there. I was pleased that the established Croation men’s doubles team got the gold.
And now the athletics have begun…
