TENNIS: Last week's ATP finals
Nov. 29th, 2020 08:48 amOnly six days after the event!
I don’t think I realised the ATP tour finals were on until last Saturday, which is probably a good thing, and I wasn’t that engaged in the afternoon’s semi-final. I had the beginning of the Djokovic-Thiem match on, then went out for a walk while there was still light and came back to watch Thiem flub some match points. The third set didn’t desperately hold my attention either, as I suspect it might have if Nadal were involved, until the final tiebreak, where Djokovic, in the lead, seemed very much in control, until Thiem found his way back, point by point. It’s a cap to an impressive year where he’s finally come into his own.
I don’t know if there would have been a way for me to watch the second semi-final, because although Nadal was playing - how has he never won this event? Well, it’s probably Federer and Djokovic and fatigue. But he didn’t make it through again. I haven’t seen much of Medvedev play, so with apologies, I supported Thiem.
But again, I saw quite a lot of the beginning and then the very end of their match, by which time Medvedev, who’s had an impressive end of the year, had played himself back into it. It does feel as if the next generation has made some inroads on the ageing greats in an abnormal year for tennis, like everything.
