TENNIS: French Open 2019 QFs
Jun. 6th, 2019 06:32 pm(Ladies’) quarter finals
I did not expect Konta’s victory over Stephens, so that news came as a shock. I was aware Konta had beaten her twice this year, but Stephens had the better slam record, was the higher seed, and yet Konta emphatically beat her. Good for her.
On Tuesday, I was able to watch/dip in and out of the quarter final to decide her opponent. Didn’t know much about either Martic or Vondourosova, but it was an entertaining match, with more drop-shots and spins than you usually see from female players. Martic was up three set points, but young Vondourosova saved one after the other and got stronger. She was composed in the tiebreak, while her opponent was not.
Suddenly, she was on a bit of a run, but Martic came back a little. Vondourosova was serving for the match, and there were, unusually, two lets (for the receiver not being ready and a visor falling off) but her nerves at serving for a place in the semi-finals at Roland Garros got to her. Martic started hitting more clearly and came back. I remembered that ‘my patriotic duty’ was to want a draining three set match. But Martic faltered and gave Vondourosova more match points and finally the match. Both were clearly good players, but in the second half of the second set, they were both aware of what they were playing for.
I saw a little of the highlights of Konta containing and overpowering her opponent.
On the men’s side, Nadal and Federer set up a rematch…
Rain meant no play on Wednesday and all the semis to be played on Friday. Again, surprising results – well, more Ansimova, who I haven’t seen play, beating Halep. This is not the semis line-up anyone expected on the women’s side, and Konta is the most experienced of the lot. On the men’s side, the cast list is far more like what was expected/hoped for.
