TENNIS: French Open 2019 R1&2
May. 31st, 2019 09:13 amAs anyone who knows me knows: it's tennis on Freeview season!
Round 1 – Among others that I followed even less assiduously, I saw Nadal and Djokovic up two sets and looking like they’d win in three, the latter outclassing a young top 50 player. John Inverdale got many court names and players’ names wrong. The women’s top players did not get through so easily, I heard about Osaka coming back from being bagelled in the first set (!) and saw Halep being taken to a third by an inconsistent player.
Round 2 – as expected, Nadal and Djokovic went through. I was a bit miffed that we had no choice on the Thursday morning to watch the tantalising Osaka v Azarenka instead of Edmund’s match. I got even grumpier as it became obvious that he didn’t have the legs to compete, so I was glad that ITV switched to the women’s match at the end of the second set, where Azarenka had lost her lead and then lost the set. Osaka put together a brilliant run of games, although she found it difficult to close out, partly because of Azarenka. It would be good if Azarenka could win a few more matches like this to raise her ranking and for such a match to be at the latter end of a slam, as it should be. I had Halep’s match on in the background at the end of the day, and it was another three-setter for her, too.
