Week 2 was children’s week, which meant cute clothes and outfits. Joe proved his commitment by dressing up as a bee (so obvious in hindsight! Shame Juliet clearly wasn’t around to be reminded of what a bee looks like) and seemed more relaxed. Janet stepped up (with her hoodie) and Jen was quietly second a lot, and quirky Leah ‘represented ballet’. Tom’s ant costume saved him from two other weak rounds. He and Mercedes need to realise fast that the first rule of Sewing Bee is to listen to the judges. Yes, sewing skills and time management/judging the difficulty to attempt are very important, but fail to listen to the judges, and they will use it as their reason to cut you. Shirley was predictably the loser this week, and the shot where they caught her bemoaning something to do with sewing and Esme just leaned into view behind her from the panels was rightly used in the taster montage. Good eye from the editor.

Week 3 was 70s week. I only started watching it as the last few trousers were being judged. The ‘punk’ transformation favoured people who remembered the era and were capable of asymmetry and rough edges – willing to take a radical approach to the making of clothes. So, it was nice to see Riccardo shine (although Jen was a strong second after perfect trousers), and some of the contestants not getting it predictable.

There was huge pressure on Alexei and Ben for the third challenge. Hearing all that Alexei was planning to do was worrying, and though I too liked the design on Ben’s material, his pleating problems seemed to be a sign of things to come. I liked a lot of the patterns on the materials and bits of the designs of the maxi dresses, which mostly looked good when the models were walking in them. It was nice for Mercedes to do well, and Alexei’s mini breakdown after the fit of his dress saved him was touching. Ben’s ambitiousness just did not go with timed challenges.

They’re a likeable bunch, especially at their most eccentric, and Jen seems to be quite a strong one in terms of coping with the variety.

Week 4 was technical materials and, to add to the challenge, featured new mannequins and models. Joe had a lot of fun with the fact that he could write/draw things on his top and get rid of them with a swipe. I still think that Esme shocks him more than he shocks her.

As the judges said, the Js shined, with Leah (still the most entertaining sewer) and Riccardo bobbing in the middle, and Mercedes and Alexei having difficulties. I was glad of the acknowledgement that Janet had to help pretty much everybody do the swimming costume. Juliet was resurgent after a relative lull and Jen’s experience continued to serve her well.

I’m not a dog person, but Winston, Patrick’s dog was cute. Who came up with THAT challenge, though? Tents and dog outfits!? What a thought process.

With the made-to-measure luxe tracksuit, Mercedes and Alexei, already under pressure, went a bit off. As he pointed out, he’d always been seventh – and the unsaid point was that only seven sewers were left. It was interesting that in the last quick interview with the judges Joe prodded them about the trousers. Was that all him, remembering that Mercedes had started with her trousers, which should then have been better, or was he prodded?

I hated the design of Riccardo’s trouser legs because they didn’t match. The stripe should have run across both of them, otherwise why bother? And why bother with having white at the bottom of trousers anyway? But I liked Juliet’s Teen Wolf-inspired design and agreed that Mercedes’s choice would have been very cool if it had come together.

If this was a show with consistent scoring, it would be interesting to see where they stood, but as long as you get through to the final and play to your strengths, it’s winnable for anyone.
