Saturday: Edmond stayed with Fognini until the end, when the more experienced Italian exerted pressure/improved his game at the end of the fifth set.

Gasquet had to play brilliant tennis to win a point or a game, but Nadal was brutal.

It was vital for Monfils to win the fourth set against Goffin. He didn’t, and it was unsurprising, as he was clearly sick, that Monfils collapsed in the fifth.

Serena outplayed Georges. I admit I was intrigued as to whether she really was close enough to her best, especially physically, to beat Sharapova again, who isn’t going to wilt mentally, as Georges did. The circumstances for both players (Williams and Sharapova) were so not normal in this French.

Sunday: Kazaktina is exciting. Just the points and shots she played initially. That she was able to pull herself together and come back to win the first, given her lack of experience was more than I expected. It was on her racquet, but Wozniacki (who’d come through the first week blithely) had the wiliness of experience on her side. Play was suspended with the commentators decrying the young Russian going along with Wozniacki about the ‘bad’ light.

In the second week, there’s less tennis, and I see less.

Monday: I was pleased that Kazaktina won her three games to clinch the match.

I came home to see Cilic play better than Fognini at the end of their match and to learn that Muguruza and Sharapova would be facing each other with fresh legs. For all the talking, what Serena said about deciding to play the doubles seemed reasonable to me. She probably did better than she had expected. It would be excellent if she were fit for Wimbledon.

I expected Thiem (the fresher player) to win against Zverev, and I was right on that, and on Stephens and Keys beating their opponents, but Djokovic – like Williams tasting some of his greatness on the court again, for the first time in a long while - was the surprise.

I expected Nadal to do a steamroller.

Wednesday: Well, Muguruza was too much for Sharapova, Halep’s comeback to beat Kerber in three sets means we have four semi-finalists who appeared in grand slam finals over the last 12 months. Two are current champions. I want Muguruza to win, although Halep in the final would be fascinating.

The Nadal vs Schwartzmann match did not start as expected, and then there was rain. I feel sorrier for the other two men, as they’ll come back to complete a tiebreaker.
