I caught the final passage of play in the rain-interrupted match between Gasquet and Johnson, and saw Johnson gain in confidence after winning his first service game on the resumption and then the tie-breaker. You could see him ‘getting’ how to play on grass, using his weapons and growing in confidence, as Gasquet, who should have won the first set if he was up 4-0, implode, again. Out in the first round here after reaching the QF in Paris and the SFs in Wimbledon last year. Tsk.
Tuesday
Day two, and I came home to see Murray win a second tiebreak and his first match at this year’s championship against a tough opponent on grass. It was followed by Raonic, the second highest seed now, facing a tricky opponent on any surface in Kyrigos, who stole the set in the tiebreak, given how easily Raonic had kept his serve. It was starting to look like Raonic was going to bottle it until he broke and won the second set. So they broke at a set apiece – the more talented Kyrigos against the improving big server...
Wednesday
There was football where tennis had been advertised, so I presumed rain was falling. I only know about what happened very early on in yesterday's play. Some seeds have lost, I know, although Queen's is strange like that, perhaps being more like the traditional grass surface and thus suiting certain players more. That is, the change of surface throws some players more after the clay.
