TENNIS: US Open 2015
Sep. 14th, 2015 09:14 pmI followed the US Open this year mainly through headlines and news stories (well done, Jo Konta) and, because it is not on Freeview, on radio. It wasn’t really a good thing that I heard Murray beating Kyrigos live, because I should have been sleeping then, but was suffering from a bit of insomnia. I heard snippets later on in the championship at a more reasonable hour British Summer Time. I’d rather be watching, though. Tennis commentary lets me know what’s going on, if I’m concentrating on things like the scores instead of following the drift of the commentary, but it doesn’t really make me ‘see’ the play, however vivid the description. I don’t feel I’ve got to grips with the US Open. I don’t understand its schedule, which is made worse by the time difference.
Like everyone else, I wasn’t expecting the all-Italian final! If one thing is certain in the women’s game (ha!), it’s that if Serena Williams wins through to the second week, she’s going to win. It seems, from what I’ve picked up, that it was the pressure. However, for Pennetta then to announce her retirement after reaching the pinnacle of her game was quite the story.
I feel a bit smug because I thought Djokovic would beat Federer (because I took Wimbledon as more of a pattern than Conneticut, chiefly because I watched it.)
