Aussie Open Women’s Final (2015)
Jan. 31st, 2015 02:44 pmI’ve mostly been following the results this year – it was striking that the last 8 women were as mixed a bunch as ever, but apart from Federer being replaced by rising star Nick Kyrigos, all the men’s top seeds were there.
However, it was no. 1 and 2, Serena Williams vs Maria Sharapova this morning. With Serena’s excellent record against Sharapova, if you wanted a match, which I did, you had to be urging Sharapova to play her best. To her credit, she did.
The rain-break threw me. I was really into the match, and then when the roof closed, went off to do other things and didn’t really give the match my full attention until towards the end of the second set, when Sharapova fought tooth and nail to keep up. There were some excellent rallies and then that horrible let call on the final point. Williams composed herself wonderfully and delivered another ace, and won her nineteenth grand slam. At the end of the first set, she had a much larger number of winners than Sharapova, plus the serve, and although Sharapova fought every point, Williams had mostly devastating answers.
