TENNIS: French Open Semi-Finals

feather_ghyllOn Thursday, I came home in time to see Petkovic raise her level to give Halep a competitive second set, at least. As all I can remember seeing of Halep play was her beating Watson, it was good to see the play that was getting such admiring commentary.
A tantalising ladies’ final lies ahead – the known quantity, champion and warrior Sharapova (although Bouchard fought impressively) versus the up and coming talent. Given the seed slaying, it’s good to have a new face (for non-Romanians and WTA obsessives) break through. even if she had got high up enough in the rankings to be number 4 seed and was described as 'the most consistent player this year' nobody was talking about her at the start of the tournament. Will the tiredness of having to fight her way through three three-setters affect Sharapova? Halep will be fresher, having enjoyed or earned the usual top ladies’ seed’s route and not dropping a set. Or will the fact that Halep has never been here before, while Sharapova has, not to mention the Russian’s mental strength tell? As ever, I hope it’s a match where we get to see the best of both players.
Last night, I came home to the end of Murray and Nadal’s first set – it was 4-2, depressingly. Well, Nadal did Murray the courtesy of playing well from the outset, except ‘well’ doesn’t cover it. It came down to wanting Murray to make Nadal serve it out, or to stop a descending scoreline, and he just couldn’t. Nadal was too good.
And so we get the final we wanted/expected on the men’s side. Here’s hoping it’s epic. Winning would mean so much to both for different reasons and losing would hurt, again for different reasons.
But apparently there were queries about Djokovic's health, which have to play into Nadal's favour.
I've picked up that Bartoli will be involved in the BBC's coverage of Wimbledon and that ITV have got coverage of the French for the next few years.
