I've picked up that Bartoli will be involved in the BBC's coverage of Wimbledon and that ITV have got coverage of the French for the next few years.

A lot of tennis yesterday, but I generally gorge myself on the first week of the French because it just isn't possible to catch as much of the second week or the grass-court season.

The reason why I didn’t watch the tennis yesterday was that I went shopping and successfully bought mumble books (all hardback girls own apart from one paperback D.E. Stevenson) for mumble mumble pounds. Actually, it worked out as being about £4.40 per book and not one of them cost more than you’d pay for a first hand paperback. It’s just the volume that makes me want to mumble. I’ll be posting many reviews about this haul, I hope.

While I wasn’t watching tennis, plenty happened on the women’s side, with seeds falling everywhere. Williams (Serena) and Li Na are the biggest surprises, but many others have gone. I suppose it's the cumulation that's the surprise, although it's telling that so many women have won the French recently. That is, nobody has come close to Nadal's domination.

I had forgotten that Queen's starts this week. I'll probably blether on about what I see of that. Let us hope that the finale isn't spoiled.

I was determined to get home in time to catch some tennis yesterday, especially as I do not think I’ll get to see either final live, but more on that after.

I've been useless about writing about the tennis, although for a while, all I had to type were variations on 'In between the rain, I saw the top players play.' Nadal seemed the wobbliest and I hadn't seen any reason to quibble with Serena Williams when she said that the only woman she was worried about was looking back in the mirror at her. Although I should make the disclaimer that I watched no tennis yesterday.

I may write more after seeing less this week. Oh, but Mark Petchey's negative/positive weapon claim drives me barmy. If it included unreturnables, I might take it more seriously.

Good to hear the phrase 'for the rest of the fortnight' and that ITV seems to have most of the same commentating team from last year, more or less, with added Judy Murray. John Inverdale was guilty of one of my pet peeves by referring to a match as a game – a game means something really specific and different in tennis.

I was all tennised out and so skipped the mixed doubles final. If we'd seen some doubles play, I might care a little more.

I hope to watch the semis today. I'm confident that Nadal will beat Ferrer and think Djokovic vs. Federer will be more competitive. There'll certainly be more edge to it, given last year. If Federer wins, I think Nadal on this form will win the championship more easily than if Djokovic is his opponent. Djokovic vs. Nadal is the one everyone wants, and unless if Federer has finally found something he's always lacked against Nadal on clay, that match-up will be a disappointment (more than it would be on any other surface). Ferrer vs. anyone in the final would be a shocker.

I'm operating on too little sleep and trying not to think about how much I spent on an item of clothing yesterday (50% off and just the colours I wanted is my only defence.)

Also, there was tennis. Read more... )

I should try to be more diligent about posting the day after, as, like footprints obliterate the marks left by the balls on the clay, the memory of one day's tennis covers the previous day's.

As advertised, here it is then, the French Open with its red clay, colourful players and distinctive 'ole'...on ITV. I can't say that I love the fact that it's sponsored by a betting agency and half the ads seem to be for other betting agencies. I'm feeling out the format and working out who the commentators are - Petchey's the only one who's crossed over from the Beeb, I think, of which I approve. I'm a bit less enthusiastic about Inverdale who is trying to put everything in a rather insular British (English) sporting context. Ah well, everyone seems to be polite to him.

I saw bits of games and wasn't much involved until tonight Read more... )

Apparently, ITV has won the rights to air the French Open. I think it'll be on ITV4.

I'm pretty much posting this as a note for future refernce by creating a new tag.
