TENNIS: Beaucoup de tennis
Thursday afternoon to Friday night (rounds two and three):
It started with Heather Watson’s defeat by the woman who yesterday became the highest seeded player left on the women’s side, which was more memorable by Marion ‘harm’ Bartolli’s whole-hearted support for the UK player. Although I would have liked to see Ivanovic play, I could understand why we went to Montfills and his interesting opponent, who made me realise I hadn’t watched that much men’s tennis so far this French Open. Perhaps that’s subjective.
I was able to watch a lot of tennis yesterday, snatches of Stosur versus Cibulkova, which was a match, although it was no surprise that the lower-ranked player, who also happened to be taller, possessing weapons that nullified Cibulkova’s strengths and more class, won. (I’ll just pause to pat myself on the back for managing not to use the automatic combination of ‘the diminutive Cibulkova’.) In the meantime, however, the day’s big story was happening on another court. No. 3 seed Radwanska, in her flowery garb, was being beaten by another ‘young gun’ . I don’t think anyone really thought ‘well, the French is Radwanska’s for the taking’ but the fact that the top three players have lost to newish faces and that it’s one for the record books made it a big story.
Nothing else lived up to that, although I enjoyed the tennis in the bits of the Djokovic vs. Cilic and Tsonga vs. Janovicz (sp?) that I saw. Meanwhile Sharapova breezed through...
And Bartolli having the giggles from commentating with Petchey on Simon vs Raonic made me think that BBC Sport should be giving her any sum she likes to commentate at Wimbledon.
