I cught two matches from the ATP Tour Finals at the O2. That is, I half-watched Del Potro vs Federer and the crowd battling it out to reach the semis on Saturday. Well, the truth is that I fell asleep at the end of it. From what I saw, it was about Federer, when he was throwing in unforced errors, Del Potro was winning, when Federer realised he was about to lose a set, he played excellently. Perhaps that’s an oversimplification. There was a point about both players being tired after so many months of play and sometimes showing signes of frayed nerves or bad choices.
Apparently there is going to be a film of Swallows and Amazons with Dan Stephens (aka Matthew Crawley from Downton Abbey) playing Captain Flint. I have no issue with Stephens playing James Turner...in several years’ time. I couldn’t find much online on the project, filming seems to have been delayed and it’s described as ‘in development’ on imdb. I was wondering if it would be an adaptation of the stage musical, but I think not now, based on what I've seen about the project.
On Monday night, in what was not a shock, despite Sue Barker’s loyal championing of Federer, Nadal vs. Djokovic, the top two players in the world, playing in the final. I didn’t begrudge the doubles players, exactly, but I did wish the singles match could have started sooner and that there hadn’t been an hour of filler in the studio. I was, again, half-asleep for the last two games.
Djokovic was better from the off, and although the scoring system and Nadal being Nadal meant that even if he couldn’t quite get what he wanted from his forehand, he was always a danger, Djokovic pulled away and looked like he was better than the world number one (was the fact that Djokovic was defending points this year that Nadal wasn’t a factor or was it just two grand slams against one?) Interesting that Nadal has never won the end of year finals – of course, it may be the court surface more than the physical rigours (but Djokovic has done better at the Aussie Open and here.)
I was supporting Nadal, so it was 0 for 2 for me, but quite soon it seemed like it wasn’t going to happen for him and I was too tired to want them to go to a third set!
