Day four: bits of cycling, swimming, badminton (I was confused about the court) and athletics, where Channel 4's coverage was still sticking to the predetermined narrative, never mind whatever happened on the track. However, Team GB had finally won some athletics golds, starting with Hannah Cockroft (of course) and Sabrina Fortune in the shotput. I tried to minimise how much wheelchair rugby I caught, because it’s brutal.
Day five: swimming, archery (indeed, pregnant archery) and athletics. There was one moment where Tanni Grey-Thompson geeked out magnificently over wheelchair racing, which, frankly, put much of the superficial ‘analysis’, to shame, as it gave a sudden insight into the myriad things an athlete had to consider in moments.
Day six involved a few glimpses, almost, of swimming and athletics. Faye Rogers’s story was particularly striking (tried out for swimming in the Tokyo Olympics, had an accident on the way to training, had neurological damage on her right side, someone suggested para-sport a few months later, which allowed her to return to swimming, was still making the necessary adjustments, but was world-record-breaking fast in the S10 classification: a lot for her to process. I caught even less of day seven.
