New presenter alert! Following in Sara Pascoe’s footsteps, Kiell Smith-Bynoe was promoted from stressed celeb contestant into personable presenter, with his acting background helping his delivery. I think he clearly got on better with Hammed, who he knew already, while Toya was giving off cougar vibes.

I spent the first round grumbling at the concept – couldn’t they get former finalists or winners to help the celebs, who have little or no sewing experience? Despite using a silky material for the liner when it expressly said ‘cotton’ (making things extra difficult for herself rather than just unseasonal) and trapping a pin inside, Jessica won, while others had bits they’d just glued on dropping off their Christmas stockings.

I warmed up by the transformation challenge – adult coats into children’s Christmas-themed 3D fancy dress outfits, where the tradition of the pattern challenge winner being rubbish at transformation continued, while Kerry’s Brussel Sprout was obviously the best. Throw in ‘how do they get in or out?’ and the same people getting third and second, and a few more jokes and I stopped complaining about Toyah Wilcox being overexcited.

Made to measure was about Christmas outfits that said something about them, and it was soon clear that a beginner’s luxe pyjamas and tunic for a man weren’t going to cut it. Jessica tried to hide her big mistake with her Christmas tree dress with decorations, while Toyah’s dress had impact and volume (and the excuse of so much to sew if the hemming wasn’t flawless (while Hammed hadn’t had time to hem his sleeves.) Fair enough that she won, but I presume there was more off-camera help than just cutting out the material, and I’d still rather watch people with a higher skill level do this. Or watch Esme and Toyah gossip about Vivienne Westwood.

After a lot of cracker jokes, Esme and Patrick good-naturedly dressed up as ZZ-Top Santas for Toyah’s song, and I was left wondering who’ll present the show proper when it returns.
