TENNIS: Clay to grass
Jun. 7th, 2010 07:50 pmCame home to see about a set and a half of Bogdanovic's match before they suspended play because of rain. I spent a bit of time blinking at the grass and the blue background - I still associate Queen's with Stella Artois and will probably do so until the current sponsership deal runs out. There's the usual 'you can't slide like that, you'll break something' and 'ooh, net play!' adjustment. There's also the weird concertina effect of going from one type of court to another the day after a grand slam. There's a break after every other slam, isn't there? (In fact, after this feast of tennis, I daresay there'll be loss and bewilderment on my part after Wimbledon.)
But for now, we are suddenly adjusting from the tight focus on one player after the final (with some mentions of Borg, Soderling, Federer, Toni Nadal, Magnus Norman and Schiavone, but mainly on Nadal) to all of these players, and small fish today, mainly, with talk of the wider field of Wimbledon to come. Like the change of colours and surfaces, it's a little bewildering. It's not just the players who have to adjust...although I'm sure I'll get used to the score etc being in English quite soon.
