TENNIS: on the other side of the world
Jan. 26th, 2010 09:44 pmI feel like a player who's almost reached the ball only to see the spin take it off in an altogether different direction...out of reach. The Australian Open, when you're me, living in the UK and not suffering from insomnia or sickness, is a matter of randomly catching the end of highlights or pressing the red button or opening the sports sections to "catch up". This process of "catching up" involves confusion about what day it is or time of day there. I haven't seen anything much beyond a few highlight points and I can't believe it's so far on in terms of the championship. I hesitate to comment because I'd probably be talking about players who are out. Case in point, I only knew Henin was back out of retirement the weekend before the open began. Perhaps I will be more in the loop in the spring.
