TENNIS: French Open - round 1

I was asked last week who I thought would win the French Open. I had to explain to them that Federer was sitting out the clay-court season, Djokovic wasn’t back to himself and neither was Serena Williams and that Ostapenko had come from nowhere much to win last year. I said Nadal or someone really young (probably Zverev on the clay-court form that has him seeded no. 2), and who knows on the women’s side.
Anyway, it’s back on ITV4, and the channel works on my Freeview box.
Day one: I had Montfils winning on in the background, saw a bit of Konta failing to break her French Open duck, and learned that her quarter has opened up with Venus Williams and Ostapenko, more surprisingly, falling on the first day. Their losses were more surprising than Konta’s, perhaps, that is. And though it’s a different surface, she will have a lot of points to defend on the grass.
Day two: Watched a bit of Kvitova (I like the turquoise she and Nadal were wearing), young Cam ‘Welsh mother, Scottish father’ Norrie deal with the occasion and an injured player capitulating well. Djokovic played well, but seemed to be in some discomfort according to the commentators. I had Nadal on in the background for the first set.
And now day three is beginning…
