The last sixteen!
I unintentionally timed it so that I could watch all of Murray's match. Kyrigos the prodigiously gifted, Kyrios the dangerous player, Kyrigos the step up and Kyrigos the bad boy who needs to grow up. On the other side, Murray with the all new pressure of being the favourite for the tournament - having had a better 2016 than Federer and, apparently, moving better.
The first set was tense. Kyrigos was controlled and playing up to the best of his reputation - until 6-5, when Murray put the pressure on. The tense Australian let some points slipped and then, at set point, flubbed a volley. The higher seed won. And Kyrigos did a Kyrigos - in complete contrast to fellow Aussie Millman, who doesn't have his weapons, but does have a professional work ethic. Granted, Kyrigos was fixating on the missed volley and Murray took full advantage, making things awkward for his opponent. I mean, he was clearly enjoying himself with some of the drop-shots, but Kyrigos lost sight of the fact that he was on Centre Court at Wimbledon in the second week and had been competitive in the previous set. He just collapsed and Murray took full advantage; his focus never wavered.
I daresay people at Centre Court were disappointed (hey, I was disappointed that Inverdale was 'commentating') but as the news came through that the winner would be playing Tsonga after Gasquet retired injured after six games, I think it's great for Murray to have won in three sets. Let us also remember that Federer hasn't dropped a set this Wimbledon either and play the long game.
The rest of the evening was taken up by some up and down Berdych and Vesely, which will have to be a one-set shootout today, while all the other male quarter finalists have booked their slots, and some doubles.
The Radwanska-Cibulkova match looks epic. I hope Cibulkova recovers. Halep v. Kerber may be telling, but it looks as though Serena, having survived week one, should advance. But will she advance all the way, when she hasn't been able to at the last three slams?
