TENNIS: Davis Cup semi-final

On Friday, for some reason, I'd got it into my head that the UK-Australia tie was being held Down Under, so I only turned the television on in time to see the end of the last set of the first day. Evans had a little fightback, but although he did a respectable job, given his ranking, and Tomic looked a little ragged towards the end. As Murray had thrashed the Aussie no. 2 player in three, I expected him to turn up for the doubles.

You can believe I made sure I was watching the doubles, although it got so tense, I sometimes couldn't watch - the end of the fourth when the Murray brothers could have won it was very tense. It was mostly entertaining. Nobody could put away an overhead on that court.

And then...Andy Murray did what he needed to do, even if it was tougher than the scoreline suggested. But there were many points where he bossed and broke Tomic.

Although there was a romantic appeal to playing at home against Argentina (we wouldn't be saying that if Del Potro was fit and had had some play under his belt), Belgium seem EMINENTLY beatable. What a thing that would be for the British team, but mainly Andy Murray.

I hate to say it, but John Lloyd made a couple of good points. It would be great to see what the best national team was if all the healthy best players were playing - and if that meant the world group played every couple of years (and avoided the Olympics) so be it. I also liked his suggestion that they let the no. 1 juniors play in dead rubbers.
