So, thanks to the rain, the semis have been delayed and the BBC has been showing Murray beating Tsonga here in the past and – to my delight – the Olympics final, because I hadn’t seen it or grasped how much Murray dominated. I heard noises that I don’t think the club had ever heard before.

Over this weekend, I've seen bits of some matches, had some matches on in the background and had to look up the men's singles results. Read more... )

There has been other Olympic stuff on that I have indeed watched, but I'll spare you my thoughts :)

I made the effort to find out most of the results yesterday (it looks as if the women's singles results are surprisingly NOT going to be a surprise) and then to watch matches on the BBC's website. I did manage to squeeze in some gymnastics and swimming as well. Is it true that Gary Lineker is one of the highest paid BBC presenters now? I don't know if it's because I keep catching him interviewing overwhelmed champions, but the words 'hole' 'sucking' and 'charisma' have been coming to mind when I've seen him, whereas Claire Baldwin, for instance, is much more engaging.

Anyway, back to the tennis! Read more... )

I find it interesting that I have no desire to watch hockey, although I'll happily read descriptions of matches in fiction. Of course, in Girls Own books, they're usually from a player's POV and, if you're lucky, reveal something about character.

I came home to...no tennis tonight. So I’ll write about it instead. I saw up until the first few games of the men’s singles final and a stretch in the middle part of the mixed doubles.

Overall, it’s been a thrilling tournament.Read more... )

And that’s another thing – the Olympics. I have so many questions about how the tennis will be organised. Apparently they're doing some kind of grass transplant to sort the surface out. But will the competitors still have to wear white? I expect I’ll get very irritated by all the other sports going on. Read more... )

This post was more like the posts I envisaged making about Wimbledon this year, having no idea of the impact the weather and the roof would have.

The previous post’s reference to crying was about the women’s finals in grand slams in general. Over the past few years, they’ve been guaranteed to make me sniffly, no matter who wins or how they win (and in a way that the men’s finals don’t). It’s just an awareness of that woman’s achievement at that moment, what it means to her and all the hard work that’s gone into it.

So, as it turned out, all the ladies QF matches – to varying degrees – ended up being played under the roof at Centre. A heartening sign that the schedulers can be sensible! And at least all the semi-finalists will have some experience of the court. Read more... )

I came home while they were closing the roof on Centre, and so I broadly caught up with the results and the discussion about whether the schedulers got it right. Read more... )

My Saturday was very full of tennis - I saw lots of the endings of matches, but only one in full. Read more... )

I've been meaning to link to this blog Why Wimbledon is just perfect for TV by Charles Arthur since reading it. It starts off with why tennis works so well as a TV sport, making some telling points, and then going on to discuss the BBC's coverage.

I expect to watch less of Wimbledon than the French Open, so I'll probably have less to say about it. Read more... )

I wish 'Today at Wimbledon' were on at nine (when the live tennis is more likely to end) than eight.

I didn't quite get round to posting this this morning. but what a Queen's to forget (see my previous entries). To crown it all, an ending that no-one wanted in the singles final. Read more... )

My next post will not be about tennis!

I've been grumbling any sport that isn't tennis* for crowding the schedule and being on when I don't want to watch it the past few days. I finally saw some live tennis yesterday! Read more... )

I see that the rain has beaten Queen's.
